Help keep the Odyssey of the Mind program free and accessible to students in Avalon and Bellevue!
Odyssey of the Mind, an after school program focused on creativity and problem solving, is currently hosting a fundraiser through the Give Big Pittsburgh campaign.
The Northgate School District's Board of School Directors at its meeting this evening appointed Dr. Nancy Hines to serve as temporary interim superintendent from Jan. 22 to June 7. Dr. Hines will fill the role while Superintendent Dr. Caroline Johns takes an education sabbatical to complete her national superintendent certification through the American Association of School Administrators (AASA).
Dr. Hines has more than two decades of experience in public education. She most recently served as superintendent of the Penn Hills School District from 2015 to this past August.
“I am so pleased to have Dr. Hines filling in during my absence," Dr. Johns said. "She comes to the district with a wealth of knowledge, and I believe she will be able to support the district in continuing to move forward with the great work that is already happening. Dr. Hines is also very student-focused, so our families should feel comfortable reaching out to her with any questions.”
As interim superintendent, Dr. Hines will oversee the day-to-day operations of the district. Dr. Johns will remain involved in certain responsibilities of the position that would be difficult to assign to an interim position.
The AASA National Superintendent Certification Program is a comprehensive leadership development program for superintendents. As part of the program, Dr. Johns will complete a Capstone Project that will have a direct benefit to the Northgate School District.
Dr. Johns will return to her role on June 10.

Kindness is a domino effect!
Avalon Elementary's Kindness Club collected 533 boxes of cereal to donate to the North Hills Community Outreach food pantry. The school had a special assembly on Oct. 31 in which the boxes were set up as dominos in the gymnasium to highlight how one small act of kindness can spread.
The initiative was part of the #bethekindkid Kindness in Action campaign.
